The date, November 11 (11/11), was chosen because the number "1" resembles a "bare stick", which is a Chinese Internet slang for a single man who doesn't marry and thus can't add 'branches' to the family tree.
光棍節(jié)或雙11，是中國(guó)非官方節(jié)日和購(gòu)物季節(jié)，慶祝單身漢和一般單身人士。
之所以選擇11月11日（11月11日），是因?yàn)閿?shù)字“1”類似于“裸桿”，這是中國(guó)互聯(lián)網(wǎng)俚語(yǔ)，意思是單身男子不結(jié)婚，因此不能在家譜中添加“分支”。
The four "1"s also abstractly refer to the demographic group of single people. The holiday has ironically also become a popular date to celebrate relationships (as to "pair up singles"), with over 4,000 couples being married in Beijing on this date in 2011, far greater than the daily average of 700 marriages.
The holiday has become the largest physical retail and online shopping day in the world.
